"Swift River, Small Stream" pastel on paper, juried into the March 2024 Open Exhibit at the Art League Gallery in Alexandria, VA.  Detail of the pastel shown here.
As a lover of the outdoors, I climbed into the small Coos Canyon in western Maine where I took reference photos that inspired this pastel.  To find this canyon, look for small picnic area and a pull off from Route 17 between Rumford and Oquossoc, Maine.  You will miss the view and these alluring details if you don't stop. Take the time to stop and appreciate the beauty of water worn rocks.

"Pear pair, Cabbage, Pear" (acrylic on canvas) was completely experimental and a departure from my typical work. I was struggling with a landscape concept that just refused to come together for me. So this semi-abstract painting evolved when I decided to paint over the landscape adding still life elements painted from life.  It took a new direction altogether - one that found a satisfying conclusion seen here.

"Shadows (Prairie, 2)" acrylic on canvas, was at Centerfuse in Manassas, VA.

Depicting the beauty of a restored prairie on the south side of Chicago.  Would you believe this scene is just south of expressway 80 in Illinois?  It is a haven for wildlife, waterfowl, birds, insects and aquatic life.  In the warmer months the wildflowers here are spectacular and attract many pollinators.

Kennebunk to Ketchum:
Explorations East to West

New Paintings by Kathleen Best Gillmann
July 5 - August 6, 2017

Arches Gallery, Workhouse Arts Center

Picture

I have been fascinated by the beauty and intricacies of the natural world for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Kennebunk, Maine, some of my earliest memories include peering into tide pools on the beach and exploring the woods and wetlands near my home.  In recent years, when I travel, I collect images of the places and scenery that resonate with my soul.  My journeys include frequent trips back to Maine and explorations as close as my own back yard to as far away as the northwestern U.S.  "Kennebunk to Ketchum" celebrates these places featuring works of favorite locations in Kennebunk, new discoveries in Ketchum, Idaho, and more.

Juror Elizabeth Peak made the following comments about her selections for 'Scapes 2015.  (from a dialogue with George Miller)

"For an artwork to be successful in this exhibit, the artist needed to use the bare elements of landscape in a creative way. “Being too literal is a weakness,” Peak said. “The point is to be visual, not literal.” ”

The painting at left is the one I've donated, "Stones Cry Out" (acrylic on canvas) is from my "North Shore" series.  A vacation to the north shore of Lake Superior back in 2003 inspired me to begin painting so many coastal and shoreline scenes which now number in the dozens.

In the image you see a bit of the hand rubbed Italian frame because this painting comes in this frame and this work of art is now privately owned!

Whether  painting local scenes, her native New England, or beyond,

encourage latent longings to travel.   Opening November 5, Occoquan and Beyond   presents Gillmann’s latest work and explores further the  theme inaugurated with last year’s celebrated exhibition at the Loft Gallery, From Oquossoc to Occoquan: an Artist’s Journey.  Uncover or  rediscover the often overlooked beauty of northern Virginia and beyond.

Inundated (Intertidal, 8) has received the top award for oil or acrylic painting this month, the Chameli & Amiya Bose Award.   The painting is on view in the front of the Art League Gallery until September 2, 2013.

Juror Elizabeth Klimek  selected my work for this reason:
Inundated (Intertidal 8), an  acrylic painting by Kathleen Best Gillmann, won the Chameli & Amiya Bose  Award for Acrylic or Oil Painting. Klimek cited the composition as the reason:  the actual landscape portion is so minimal, with a huge sky and lines drawing  the eye across the painting.

July 2013
Intertidal : Coastal Paintings

Ms. Gillmann's latest paintings of coastal Maine explore her fascination with the mercurial qualities of water and atmosphere affected by the moody, changeable weather characteristic of New England.  Salt marshes, estuaries and beaches are influenced by this weather and the daily cleansing of the tides.  These subtle and dramatic features of the intertidal zone will be featured in Ms. Gillmann's exhibit.

Ms. Gillmann grew up in southern Maine and matured with a love of nature and the outdoors which is evident in her landscapes and waterscapes. The show runs July 3 - August 4 with the opening reception 6:00-9:00p.m. July 13.
